EPD (Environmental Product Declarations)
Tung Ho Steel's Taoyuan Works has obtained the Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) certificate for steel bars and passed UL certification. We are the first construction steel company in Taiwan to obtain EPD (Environmental Product Declarations) report for all of our products.
EPD is an extension of global warming and climate anomalies. Based on the characteristics of product life cycle, EPD provides consumers with quantitative and comparable environmental performance results according to ISO 14025 standard (Environmental Product Declarations and Labels). The environmental data of the whole life cycle (LCA) of the product is evaluated, providing quantitative information, including the life cycle of raw material acquisition, manufacturing, transportation, use and disposal, and calculating the impact values of items such as ozone layer depletion, acid rain, eutrophication, climate change, and potential toxicity risks, etc., which are then verified by third-party independent and impartial units, helping consumers to purchase environmentally friendly products. This is an important basis for consumers to purchase environmentally friendly products. We will continue to disclose environmental information to further reduce the environmental burden during the life cycle of our products.

The first steel plant in Taiwan to introduce H-beam steel products produced using a multi-purpose rolling and extending machine
In previous production processes that were not integrated, refined steel would first be cooled down for storage after having reached the high temperature of over 1,000 degrees. During this process, a significant amount of energy would be consumed, and thus Tung Ho Steel and equipment suppliers carried out research and development to make improvements that enabled the steelmaking production process to become an integrated chain, with direct transfer to the second-stage process after manufacture is completed. Steel refining and rolling are thus built into the same line in a way that improves overall efficiency while reducing costs.
Currently, the H-beam multi-purpose steel-rolling plants at Tung Ho Steel’s Miaoli Works and Kaohsiung Works have annual production capacity of more than 1.2 million metric tons, while providing a full range of sizes to satisfy the needs of the market and customers for H-beam steel. Moreover, in addition to being capable of producing H-beam steel, the multi-purpose rolling equipment can also be used in the production of other types of steel products such as: multi-purpose steel plates, heavy steel bars, heavy steel rails, steel sheet piles, T-beams, I-beams, parallel channel steel, and other heavy steel of various special shapes.
Tung Ho Steel also features the usage of environmentally friendly materials. Existing steel and steel scrap are recovered to be used as source material for steel refining, with the steel scrap categorized by different levels to be re-refined and made into new products, enabling the material to be continuously recycled and reused.
Utilization of the world’s most advanced direct rolling process
The Tung Ho Steel Taoyuan Works relies primarily on all-new designs to conserve energy, reduce carbon emissions, and protect the environment, and has introduced the world’s most advanced direct rolling process. Through modernized configuration of connected steelmaking and rolling front-to-back work processes, the red-hot billet is rapidly sent to the steel-rolling facility for rolling and forming of rebar. During this process, only electric induction heater is used to raise slightly on the billet temperature. This makes it the first steel plant in Taiwan without a traditional reheating furnace. In addition to eliminating the pollution and emissions generated from the process of burning, a greater reduction is achieved in heat energy consumption during the course of production (equivalent to an annual reduction of approximately 68,631 tons of CO2 emissions. That is the same as the CO2 absorbed annually by 176 Da’an Forest Parks).
The vast majority of rebar plants in the world today need a reheating furnace to reheat the billet in order to roll, and form it. Today, Tung Ho Steel’s Taoyuan Works has achieved an innovation that has eliminated reheating furnaces and leads to direct rolling process. This allows for low energy consumption and almost no pollution, and has been imitated and introduced by many rebar plants both at home and abroad. This is a significant and very positive contribution to efforts to protect the natural environment on earth.
A rebar plant without a reheating furnace represents a new milestone for steel industry in Taiwan
A production plant that is integrated with the environment
The Taoyuan Works established road systems and factory areas without involving changes to the terrain or landscape and without altering existing nationally protected land. Employing softly colored corrugated plates has enabled the plant facility’s exterior to integrate with the local natural scenery. Adding to this the landscaped environment with planted vegetation in the factory areas and the creation of a scenic pond that can be used for leisure as well as other facilities, the plant has completely shattered the rigid, bland image of traditional factories.

Innovations in research and development. extensions of services
Even though rebar is a very mature steel building material, nonetheless Tung Ho Steel’s Taoyuan Works has continued to achieve innovations in research and development in hopes of developing new products that can be used more broadly than in traditional rebar applications. The aim in these endeavors is to provide higher construction quality or to save human effort and work time. Newly researched and developed products include threaded rebar(Screw rebar), compact rebar in coil and ultra-high strength rebar. In addition, Tung Ho Steel is also actively developing downstream processing in connection with rebar, in hopes of providing customers with higher quality and more comprehensive product sales and services.
